INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON: HIGHER EDUCATION IN TRANSFORMATION DUBLIN, IRELAND MARCH 30-APRIL 1

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS AND WORKSHOPS EXTENDED UNTIL NOVEMBER 14TH

Within the context of a rapidly changing higher education landscape internationally, a group of universities and higher education institutes from Canada and Ireland will host a Joint Symposium consisting of a 1 day series of workshops followed by a 2 day conference.

The symposium will be held in Dublin, Ireland, in March/April 2015 to explore three primary thematic areas:

1. The Enterprising University

2. Re-Imagining our Curriculum

3. The Globally Engaged University

Workshops and presentations may address these themes either in the broad context of the university as a whole or they may address the themes as they play out in specific disciplinary or professional contexts. Some elaboration of the planned themes follows below.

CALL FOR CONFERENCE ABSTRACTS

The symposium is intended to examine and discuss recent and current related to these three thematic areas. Papers on related topics of interest such as, for example, universal design for higher education and the virtual university, are also welcome.
Many educational practitioners argue that Higher Education Institutes need to adopt entrepreneurial approaches to their own development, in order to sustain and grow their capacity to serve the needs of their regions. The Enterprising University theme invites papers that will explore how and why Universities

(i) should actively examine their own activities and the external environment for opportunities to utilise its resources to generate commercial reward

(ii) could best invest resources that are not derived from public funding in opportunities that are in harmony with the Mission, Vision and Values of the University and

(iii) successful programmes will result in a broader financial base for the university and an increased capacity to serve the region.

Additionally, all Universities strive to promote a distinctive approach to the learning experience for all students will enable learners to develop skills, knowledge and competencies that will equip them for the future. The Re-Imagining our Curriculum theme invites papers that will examine and explore current research in the areas of

 

(i) transitions pedagogy and addressing the needs of diverse learner groups

(ii) curriculum models that allow for choice and flexibility including multi-disciplinary programmes and

 (iii) support and quality frameworks that foster meaningful work placement and engagement activities throughout the learner experience.

We know that universities and higher education institutions must have a strong international focus in an era of globalisation where inward investment, knowledge-based enterprises and increasing exports are some of the key drivers to economic growth. To address the Globally Engaged University theme we invite papers that will examine

(i) the impact of internationalisation on higher education

(ii) how internationalisation can impact the equality and diversity agenda in higher education and

(iii) what are the key graduate attributes and skillsets required to compete in a global economy.

Abstracts for the conference are invited for 20-minute presentations with 10-minute discussion. Interested educators and researchers are invited submit a provisional abstract of 500 words with the names of the presenters, their affiliations the thematic area for the submission. Following abstract acceptance, a full paper must be submitted to the conference organisers by February 1, 2015, for inclusion in the proceedings. See important dates for more information.
